2012 PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship is back! The 2012 season sees PETRONAS celebrate its 10th year association with the Malaysian Cub Prix. Title partners to the PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship since 2006, the brand new 2012 season was recently kicked-off on 28th of March 2012 in Kuala Lumpur.

Speaking on behalf of PETRONAS, Anita Azrina Abdul Aziz, General Manager of PETRONAS Motorsports stated “the 2012 PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship season is a landmark for us as we celebrate our 10th year association with the sport in this past decade, we have witnessed the sport has grown and flourish to become the leading and largest national motorsport event. Being that the championship itself is almost two decades old; this is an achievement we should all be proud of”.

In addition to receiving inclusion continued support of motorcycle manufacturers and other sponsors, the 2012 season sees the addition of a joint programme by Universiti Selangor (UNISEL) offering young riders an alternative way to infuse a degree education and racing career via scholarships for CP130, CP115 and Wira riders.

Promising an eventful season, the 2012 championship will see the return on familiar riders like former champions Shahril Izzuwan and Ramdan Mohd Rosli; both with the PETRONAS stable of teams; as well as to crop of new young riders joining the country’s largest motorcycle championship. The 10-rounds of the championship will take the season from the northern-most host state of Perlis right down to Johor.

The first round of the 2012 PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship was held at Stadium Pulau Pinang in Batu Kawan on 31 March with the qualifying rounds and the final races on 1 April. Boasting an impressive number of riders for the first championship race, the atmosphere in Batu Kawan was exciting and thrilling.

With PETRONAS Talent Development Programme riders competing in the premier CP115 and CP130 categories, the round proved a successful on for PETRONAS Syntium Moto Yamaha Raceline‘s Mohd Iskandar Raduan who bagged his first win of the season in the CP115 category. Though his teammates and those in the sister PETRONAS Syntium Moto AHM team were unable to share the glory with Iskandar; the encouraging pace they demonstrated in the heats points to an interesting season ahead.

In the CP130 category, PETRONAS’ 4 riders had a much better outing with PETRONAS Syntium Moto Yamaha AHM’s Mohd Ramdan Mohd Rosli finishing 6th ahead of Mohd Syawal Mohd Noor 8th place finish. Meanwhile, PETRONAS Syntium Moto Yamaha Raceline’s Mohd Hafieenaz Mohd Ali and Mohd Hafizal Hamid placed 11th and 12th, respectively.

Commenting on the round, Promotions Director of Safe Aim Mutual, Ron Hogg notes, ‘Batu Kawan saw the highest participation the Championship has had for an opening round, with 157 riders in total from all categories including the Honda Wave Junior Challenge which features brand new faces, the Yamaha 135 Super Series PETRONAS and Privateers. Usually it would take a couple of races before we reach such a high-volume entry list’ said Ron Hogg, Promotions Director of Safe Aim Mutual Sdn Bhd (SAM). The 2012 PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship is surely providing an intense competition for the riders.”
