2006 PETRONAS Sprinta AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship
Through its collaboration with Hong Leong Yamaha, PETRONAS announced in March that it is fielding two teams to compete in the expanded 2006 PETRONAS SPRINTA AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship. The announcement means that PETRONAS will now be represented in the championship by two manufacturer-backed teams, the PETRONAS SPRINTA RACELINE and PETRONAS SPRINTA AH HONG teams. Both teams will field a line-up of experienced riders to compete in both the Expert and Novice categories.
The PETRONAS SPRINTA RACELINE TEAM features an experienced rider line-up led by Ahmad Fuad Baharuddin who finished the 2005 season as the runner-up in the Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC). Contesting the Expert Category, Ahmad Fuad will pair with teammates Abdul Rahim Sidek and the 2003 Novice Champion, Mohd Syahnas Shahidan. Taking on the team’s challenge in the Novice category will be Mohd Rashid Abdul Razak alongside the 2005 Wira EPG champion, Mohd Iskandar Raduan.
Meanwhile, the PETRONAS SPRINTA AH HONG TEAM will bank on the vast experience of Cub Prix veteran Chia Tuck Cheong to lead the team’s challenge in the Expert category. Lining up alongside Chia Tuck Cheong in the Expert category will be Ahmad Azhar Hamid and the promising young and upcoming rider Zulhelmi Ahmad. For the Novice category, team PETRONAS SPRINTA Ah Hong will field two riders, Mohd Zamri Baba and Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman.
PETRONAS had previously fielded its own team, the PETRONAS SPRINTA Racing team to compete in the championship since 2003. Among the team’s main highlights include the Championship title and third overall in Novice Category in 2003; runner-up in the 600cc Supersport category in the 2003 Asia Road Racing Championship. Last year, the team finished third overall in the Novice category and came in fifth for the championship team award.
