ARRC09: PETRONAS FIM Asia Road Racing Championship - Profile & Calendar

PETRONAS FIM Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC)
Season 2009
Profile

The growth of the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC), known also as the Asian GP has been evident over the past few years, with the participation of more teams and riders from the region.

As the Asian equivalent to the FIM World Road Racing Championship or better known as the MotoGP, the Asian GP celebrates its 10th year anniversary in 2007 and is poised to cement its stature as the region’s foremost motorcycle racing championship.

The training ground
Introduced in 1997, the ARRC is sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) and stands as the federation’s Continental Championship for Asia. Established with the objective of grooming Asian talents in the two-wheel category, the ARRC also acts as the next stage for Asian riders to progress to from their respective national championships. As the development stage, the championship acts the spring board for Asian riders to hone their skills on race machines similar in power and class to those used in other FIM events before making their debut on the international stage.

From race track to showroom
In general, motorcycle racing enjoys a high level of popularity among Asian consumers. As the preferred mode of transportation in most Asian nations, the fact that the races are contested on homologated machines that are also available in showrooms across the continent allows a strong sense of association for the fans.

The ARRC also stands in class of its own, as the one and only championship to run a premiere 4-stroke category – the SuperSport 600cc class; a GP class – the GP125cc category; and a rider development class – the Underbone 125cc.

Moreover, the ARRC is the only motorcycle championship that has spanned the Asian continent, with championship rounds in Malaysia, Philippines, China and Indonesia. Aside from drawing in riders from Japan, China, Malaysia, Indonesia and India onto its starting grid, the ARRC has in the past attracted riders from beyond the region like Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain.

Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit sets the stage for the 2009 PETRONAS FIM Asia Road Racing Championship season hosting both the curtain raiser round of the championship.
