ARRC09: PETRONAS SPRINTA Yamaha Indonesia - Team Profile

2009 PETRONAS FIM Asia Road Racing Championship
Season 2009
PETRONAS SPRINTA YAMAHA Indonesia Team - Profile

In step with the manufacturer tie-up with Yamaha in Thailand that led to the expansion of the PETRONAS SPRINTA racing team franchise; PETRONAS’ efforts to supplement the downstream lubricant business activities in the region also focused on another key market – Indonesia.

2007 marked an important step for PETRONAS when it inked a partnership with Yamaha Indonesia that led to the formation of the YAMAHA PETRONAS FDR Star racing team. Under the guidance and supervision of mechanical engineer Benny Djati Utomo, the team was initially focused on cementing its dominance in Indonesia’s national championships.

However, their extraordinary form and impressive championship-winning track record at home quickly prompted the natural move up to the Asian racing scene. In preparation for the impending debut, the team’s initial steps led them to spot entries in the FIM ARRC in 2007.

The following year, under the banner of the PETRONAS SPRINTA Yamaha Indonesia racing team, the Indonesian outfit made their full season debut with the Yamaha YZF-R6 in PETRONAS colours. Ironically, their debut took place at Round 1 of the 2008 season on the team’s home soil at the Sentul International Circuit in Indonesia.

Having to select from a large pool of experienced riders with multiple victories to their names was no easy task for the team. When it came down to it, the team’s rider line-up had to combine the concept of balance and cooperation that led to the pairing of a veteran rider and a new-comer. The latter would serve as the mentor, guide and role model for the novice teammate.

The line-up for the team’s second season in the FIM ARRC mirrors that objective with 26-year old Harlan Fadhillah and 24-year old Sudarmono taking up the team’s challenge in the SuperSports 600cc category.
