PETRONAS FORMULA XPERIENCE
RACING SCHOOL SERIES
May 2006

PROGRAMME PROFILE

Bridging Interests with reality
The motorsports landscape in Malaysia has transformed rapidly since the country’s first foray into the Formula One arena in 1999 when it played host to the first PETRONAS Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit, one of the world’s top racing circuits. The exposure from Formula One has paved the way to the country becoming the region’s motorsports hub, hosting other international level races like the MotoGP, Asian Touring Car Championship and the Japan GT.

PETRONAS’ association with rally and track racing since the late 1980s and more significantly its participation in Formula One since the mid-1990s has had the net effect of popularising motorsports in Malaysia. Through various support activities, PETRONAS has also endeavoured to bring the motorsports experience closer to the community at large. With the increasing level of awareness in motorsports in the country, the interest has translated into activities like karting and a growing pool of karters with the potential to be developed further to the next level of competitive racing.

The announcement that PETRONAS would extend its long standing partnership with Sauber to the newly formed BMW-managed Formula One team culminated with the signing to become the Premium Partner to the BMW Sauber F1 Team in November 2005. The partnership provides the corporation the opportunity to utilise BMW’s motorsports heritage and expertise in the development of PETRONAS’ driver development programme.

Discovering Hidden Talents
Realising the hidden potential of promising young racing talents, PETRONAS Formula Xperience (PFX) Racing School Series was created with the objective of nurturing these young racing talents into high-quality and professional race car drivers.

Modelled after Formula BMW’s Education and Coaching Programmes in Europe, the PFX Racing School Series serves to bridge the gap between karting and open-wheel single-seater formula racing. The programme is designed to equip young racing talents aged 15 - 18 years old with the fundamentals of single-seater formula racing as they progress in their motorsports career.

Holistic Development
Under the tutelage of experienced single-seater formula racing instructors and PETRONAS trainers, the candidates of the PFX programme are provided with theoretical and practical training for single-seater racing such as aspects on driving techniques, race strategy and vehicle dynamics.

To facilitate the learning process, candidates will be able to put their knowledge to the test via 10 Formula BMW cars. In addition, the PFX Racing School Series will also focus on other equally important aspects such as fitness training, public and media relations as well as personal discipline to provide a more holistic personal development for these young racing talents.
