Circuit Profile
What began as an idea became a reality when the Sepang International Circuit was completed with its ultramodern facilities in 1999. Given the honour to incorporate the F1 logo in its name, the state-of-the-art circuit was completed in a record 14-months and was officiated on 9 March 1999 by the then Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. Since its inaugural opening, the track now plays hosts to a number of international motor sports events and is on its way to fulfilling the country’s aspirations to become the hub for motor racing activities in the region.
Situated near the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, the circuit is about 85 kilometers away from the Kuala Lumpur city centre and is accessible via the North-South Expressway, railway links and a network of highways..
With a length of 5.543 kilometers, the track features 15 turns and 8 straights with speeds in excess of more than 300 km/h. A wide track also allows ample opportunities for overtaking, ensuring a race filled with suspense and thrills.
The track can accommodate up to 130,000 spectators at a time with 32,000 spectators in the main grand stand and 18 corporate suites. The most recent additions of 2 grand stands facing turns 1 and 7 can fill up to 18,500 spectators.
The circuit’s main feature is the 1.3 kilometer double frontage grandstand, affording spectators a view of the track’s longest straights.
Technical Review: Sepang
The home race for the national oil corporation PETRONAS, the 2010 edition of the race will be the circuit's 12th grand prix event. As the second Asian venue after Japan, the circuit was also amongst the first designed by Hermann Tilke. A drivers' circuit, Sepang's flowing design makes it a challenging one, placing huge demands on the chassis and the teams’ choice of set-up. There are several corner combinations in which stability is a crucial factor. The car's aerodynamic efficiency is extremely essential here, added to which, the slower sections of the track place the emphasis on good traction under acceleration on the exit. Added to which, the rear tyres always operate under extremely heavy loads. But what compounds the degree of difficulty at Sepang has to be extreme weather conditions that can change in a blink of an eye.
