Circuit Profile

Completed in a record 14-months, the state-of-the-art Sepang International Circuit was officiated on 9 March 1999 by then Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. Since its inaugural opening, the track now plays hosts to a number of international motor sports events and is on its way to fulfilling the country’s aspirations to become the hub for motor racing activities in the region.

Measuring 5.543 kilometers in length, the track features 15 turns and 8 straights with speeds in excess of more than 300 km/h. A wide track also allows ample opportunities for overtaking, ensuring a race filled with suspense and thrills. The main highlight of the circuit is its 1.3 kilometre double frontage grandstand which affords spectators a view of the track's two longest straights.

In addition to being home of the PETRONAS Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix since 1999, the circuit now plays a central role in hosting other high-profile motorsports events in the region, including the prestigious MotoGP championship, its regional equivalent the Asia Road Racing Championship to name a few.

In 2000, the circuit was awarded the honour of being the first non-Japanese track to host a round in the All-Japan GT Championship. Initially starting out as a special stage to the championship, the round eventually became a points-award round and has since been a fixture in the series.

Situated near the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, the circuit is about 85 kilometers away from the Kuala Lumpur city centre and is accessible via several Expressways and railway links.
