The Business of Motorsports

Driving Business, Enhancing Indigenous Technological Capabilities

Motor sports also serves as an ideal test-bed for its fuel and lubricant products as well as harnessing technological and human capabilities. Being two industries that rely on technical excellence and innovation, motorsports and the oil and gas industry share common ground and complement each other in constantly pushing and redefining technological frontiers.

For PETRONAS, the motor sports involvement helped push both the corporation and country to new technological heights. The 8-year technology-transfer programme (TTP) developed in partnership with Sauber helped to equip Malaysian engineers with the knowledge of and technology derived from F1.

Fluid Technology

As the test-bed for the promotion of R&D in the core areas of its fuel and lubricants business as well as enhancing technological capabilities within the group, PETRONAS tapped into the high-technology sport resulting in an R&D programme in the areas of fuel and lubricants. This resulted in the successful development, formulation and application of the technology into the production of the fully synthetic F1 formulation SYNTIUM engine lubricant and PRIMAX F1 fuel.

The knowledge acquired through this association has ultimately been passed back to the consumer through the development of fuel and lubricants for passenger vehicles, evidenced through the development of its SPRINTA motorcycle lubricant and the PETRONAS PRIMAX 3 fuel introduced in 2006.

Reflecting the commitment towards human capital development, the TTP also enabled Malaysian engineers to chalk up a number of achievements to complement the local automotive engineering sector. This included the development of the prototype 2-litre passenger car engine and a 3-cylinder 4-stroke motorcycle engine, and engines for leisure sport vehicles.

The expertise and knowledge gained through its various projects have been ultimately re-injected into the very pulse of the nation. On top of proving the technological and capabilities of Malaysian engineers, the success is hoped can be a source of inspiration to others to aspire for greater goals.
