Four-time World Superbike champion Carl Fogarty parted some very useful riding tips to PSR riders Ahmad Zamani Baharuddin, Suhadi Ali Rahmat and Mohd Syahnas Shahidan prior to their final assault in the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship in Sepang next December.
The motorcycle icon was in town today (24 Oct) during the launch of Malaysia's first superbike - the PETRONAS FP1, and managed to get acquainted with the boys and share his racing experience. Currently preparing for the final round of the Supersports 600cc category, 27-year old Ahmad Zamani Baharuddin will be going up against the region's best and is currently trailing in third overall with 101 points. Ahead in the lead are Japanese Toshiyuki Hamaguchi with 135 points and Australian Cameron Donald in second overall with 121 points.
Carl said, "Throughout the riding session I had today, I truly feel that Sepang is one of the best circuits in the world and to master it would be very rewarding. From the brief ride I had, I would recommend using a lot of rolling speed into the corners since it is one of the widest motorcycle circuits around. I suggested to the boys where to brake ideally and to follow through with a clean and precise racing line." He went on to give more detailed technical tips especially when riding a Japanese make.
When asked what is the one useful advice he would part to the riders, Carl jokingly said, "You definitely have to go a lot faster than the rest. That's the only way to win. Also, never give up. Even if you feel you may have lost the race, it's always good to try and push on. This is what differentiates between the winners and the losers."
The insights from the four-time world superbike champion certainly proved to be a calling for the PSR trio to strive harder in their final Asia Pacific round next December. Zamani said, "I know all the things he said are true, but when you are riding and you get really 'possessed', you tend to make mistakes. In racing, even the slightest mistake can mean a big difference. But coming from a champion as big as Carl, I'm sure I wont forget his advise."
For Suhadi, meeting Carl and be given advise from the former world champion was too good to be true. He said, "I'm a big admirer of Carl and the gutsy way he rode his machine. I've watched every race he competed in when I was younger. It's like a dream come true to be given racing advise by your idol. I'm sure I'll be using every bit of info he has parted."
For the PSR duo Suhadi and Syahnas, their recent achievement in the Novice class this year of the PETRONAS Sprinta AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship certainly provided the right boost for them to push for podium in December. Also, their recent 1-2 victory in Batu Kawan that handed Syahnas the Novice class championship title will surely be used as a motivation for them to fight in the Expert class next year alongside teammate Suhadi.
Syahnas said, "We will focus our attention to the Expert class next year using a brand new machine - the Yamaha 125Z. I hope to be as competitive in the premier class as I have been this year and hopefully I can get the team to rally behind us again."
