The 62-member team, together with PETRONAS staff put on their gloves and rolled their sleeves to take part in a tree-planting project with the students, which was part of the programme at the school. They were also treated to special local traditional performances by the students. Located at the Chungkao Village in the Wuhua District on the outskirts of Kunming, some of the students are from the Miao ethnic minority group who are renowned for their handicrafts and artwork as well as their traditional dance and music.
Members of the PETRONAS Adventure Team also put up a special interactive science demonstration at the school to help nurture an active interest in science among its students. In addition, through PETRONAS’ subsidiary - PETRONAS Marketing China Co. Ltd, the corporation also contributed school bags, stationary sets and electronic items, in addition to sports equipment and study aides to the school.
The programme at the school is part of PETRONAS’ community programme held in conjunction with the PETRONAS Trans-Himalayas Expedition 2005. The overland four-wheel drive expedition is the Team’s seventh adventure, taking it through Thailand and Laos, into the Himalayas and China before finishing in the port city of Shenzhen in China on September 28. The PETRONAS Trans Himalayas expedition will cover a total distance of over 15,000km.
As part of the PETRONAS Motorsports family, the Team has previously embarked on six successful expeditions, proudly carrying the PETRONAS and Malaysian flags and messages of good will to countries where the Malaysian national oil corporation operates. Past adventures were the Passage to Tibet in 1999, Indo-China in 2000, Silk Road in 2001, Siberia in 2002, Africa Trek in 2003 and Trans-Sahara 2004.
