Leaving Mae Hong Son, the team picked up Ataporn Nilmanee and Panya Phichiensoonthorn from PETRONAS Retail Thailand Limited. They have been very helpful; making the necessary arrangements for the PETRONAS Adventure Team during their brief sojourn in Thailand. They will see the team off at the Thai-Laos border of Chiang Khong.
Since Mae Hong Son is famous for its hill tribes, the team stopped over at the Karen Ko Yao Tribe Nai Soi Village, the largest of the Padaung villages. The Padaung are refugees from Myanmar who weave and make handicrafts for sale to tourists. They have come to meet the long-necked women from Myanmar who wear brass ornaments around their necks and limbs. They start wearing the brass rings at a tender age of five years old, and never take it off.
En route to Chiang Mai, the team also surveyed the damage caused by flash floods a week ago. Waters five metres deep had ripped through the land, uprooting giant trees, destroying bridges, and leaving behind a mud wall 1.5m high, all in two hours. Scenes of devastation shock many members, reminding them of the Asian Tsunami. Tomorrow morning, the team will meet familiar faces from Malaysia; stay with us to find out who they are.
