Team SAUBER PETRONAS, along with other PETRONAS Motorsports fraternity visited the Sarawak Cultural Village in Santubung, near Kuching and were given a VIP tour around the world’s largest single site liquefied natural gas (LNG) complex in Bintulu.
Accompanying the large entourage of drivers and riders from all PETRONAS-sponsored teams in the first visit were children from various schools around the state. Among the highlight of the event were when the drivers played a local guitar, tried their hands at grinding rice the traditional way and shoot darts using the ‘sumpit’. They also had a first-hand look at how each indigenous race in Sarawak lived by touring the many replicas of local houses in the village.
Yesterday, Fisichella and Massa along with all other drivers and riders visited the PETRONAS LNG Complex and ASEAN Bintulu Fertiliser plant in Bintulu, Sarawak. The largest single site LNG manufacturer in the world, the plant contributes an astounding 5% to Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures yearly.
Earlier, they were shown a demonstration of the LNG in its processed form. Possessing an extremely low temperature of minus 350 degrees Celcius, LNG is able to freeze anything that come into contact with it, including a rubber ball and real flowers (pix).
After the highly informative visit to the LNG plant, the team were then ushered to the nearby Kidurong Club for another get-together with some Secondary 3 students. Acting their part as role models, the drivers and riders were then ‘grilled’ with questions from the students on every aspect of their career.
