Race 1 Report: Dominic Blitzes field with race victory
Weather: Dry and sunny,

Sepang. The second school race event in the 2007 season of the PETRONAS Formula Xperience on Saturday celebrated Dominic Ang as the winner of race one at the Sepang F1 Circuit. Starting from pole position, the 18-year old carried the momentum of his qualifying form on Friday to secure the win with a time of 23:41.120 minutes, after building a commanding 12 second lead to second place finisher Arvin Roslan and Muhammad Akid Azlim in third.

Starting from pole position, Dominic managed to pull away from the rest of the field after a good start. The 18-year old continued to build on his lead all the way through to the chequered flag adding another win to the two he secured at the first school race event two weeks ago.

The exciting 10-lap race saw action throughout the race for the drivers in midfield with four drivers battling it out for third position between Aizat Shameer Azmi (Car 9), Ammirol Mahmood (Car 7), Muhammad Akid (Car 11) and Mohd Adeeb (Car 5). However an incident between Aizat and Adeeb saw both drivers drop out of the fight and Adeeb forced to retire on lap 2. The race positions at the head of the field remained the same for much of the race until the final lap when a spin cost Ammirol his third position, handing the final podium position to Muhammad Akid.

Dominic celebrates his race victory with Arvin Roslan (left, 2nd place) and Muhammad Akid (right, 3rd place)

Dominic Ang, PFX Driver, Car 1 (age: 18 years), Winner Race 1 -“I am really happy with the win! I had a good start and I managed to pull away from the field right from the first lap. From then on, I did not push too hard and tried to maintain a consistent lap time throughout. Basically, everything worked really well and I would like to thank my instructors, the mechanic and the crew for the advice they have given me to prepare for this race. I am looking forward to the next race and I hope I can repeat the same performance.”

Arvin Roslan, PFX Driver, Car 6 (Age: 18 years), 2nd Place - “I started in second place and I finished in second place, which is really great. I tried to push as hard as I could to catch Dominic but he was too far away. From then on I tried to focus on my race pace and bring the car home. It was a really good race and I really enjoyed it! My goal for tomorrow is to improve on the performance today to try and aim for a better result tomorrow.”

Muhammad Akid Azlim, PFX Driver, Car 11 (age: 18 years), 3rd Place - “Firstly I am really happy to get a podium finish for this race. I really did not expect it, especially starting from seventh on the grid! My start was really good and I managed to gain two positions. From then on, my goal was to try and stay focused in the race especially as the fight was quite tough in midfield. I am not really sure what happened between the cars ahead of me and I was up to fourth. On the last lap, Ammirol had a spin and I managed to take the position from him and to finish up in third for the first time is an amazing feeling!”

Chris Wasserman, Lead PFX Instructor – “We had a really exciting race today. Unfortunately there were a few incidents between several cars in midfield, which opened up quite a gap to the first two drivers and the rest of the field. Overall, the performance of the drivers was really impressive. They have made quite an improvement over the course of the season. We can see that the drivers’ race-craft is improving, which should give us a good race tomorrow.”
