PETRONAS MOFAZ RACING to Take Up Challenge in Formula BMW Pacific

PETRONAS and MOFAZ Racing (formerly known as MOFAZFortec Motorsport) today inked a collaborative partnership to extend both corporations’ motor sports pursuits in the Asia Pacific region. The formation of the PETRONAS MOFAZ RACING team will see the participation of the team in the region’s highly competitive Formula BMW Pacific series from 2010.

A collaborative effort between MOFAZ and PETRONAS, the team has been formed with the intention of creating a platform to nurture and further develop young Malaysian drivers through racing exposure in the region’s most competitive entry-level single seater racing series.

“We are truly blessed to be given this opportunity to fortify our relationship and association with PETRONAS in global motorsports, which has stood through the test of time. Through perseverance and diligence, we know that with PETRONAS’ strong support and experience, the PETRONAS MOFAS RACING team will indeed be a strong and driven alliance that will position and build the country’s reputation in motor sports at the international stage, and also provide the opportunities for our fans throughout the world to know how united we are under the banner of One World, We Care, We Share”, says Team Principal Haji Mohamed Fauzy Abdul Hamid.

The PETRONAS MOFAZ RACING team will feature a line-up of the country’s promising young drivers, taken from PETRONAS’ existing young talent development initiative - the PETRONAS Formula Xperience (PFX) racing school. Spearheading the team’s challenge for the 2010 season are the quartet of Calvin Wong Weng Man (17), Ryan Ritchie (16), Natasha Nur Ida Adam Seatter (16) and Abang Amirrul Hadi Abang Khirudin (17).

Since the introduction of the series, the Formula BMW series has positioned itself as one of the premier entry-level single seater series in the world and one of the primary routes to advanced formula levels en route to Formula One.

MOFAZ RACING
With 20 years of experience and exposure in the global motorsports scene, MOFAZ Racing has persevered to emerge as one of Malaysia’s leading pioneers of motorsports and indeed an emerging force in the European racing arena, specifically through their committed involvement in the World Series by Renault Formula 3.5. Despite it being its first year in such a global championship that is seen by many as the final preparation series prior to F1, MOFAZ Racing has managed to challenge all odds to constantly produce amazing results at each and every race, finishing top 5 in the Team Championship of World Series by Renault 2009, and successfully managing the runner-up in the Driver’s Championship within the same series, Fairuz Fauzy. Various motorsports involvement by MOFAZ Racing prior to the World Series by Renault also included GP2, GP2 Asia, Formula 3, British Formula 3, British Formula Renault, British Formula Ford all the way to global-level and entry-level Go Karting.

PETRONAS
The national oil and gas corporation’s involvement in and association with motor sports of more than two decades has proven to be an effective platform in providing a direct support towards its business expansion, while complementing international branding efforts. As a business that operates on the global stage, the experience has also presented PETRONAS with the opportunity to play a role in the development of local motor sports. Through the expertise and knowledge gained through its motor sports involvement, PETRONAS has been able to develop programmes that are targeted towards talent development, which also forms part of PETRONAS’ corporate social responsibility agenda.

In step with the rapid growth of motor sports in the country, increasing the awareness and popularity of the sport particularly amongst the young, these talent development initiatives are designed to contribute, support and enhance the development of local motor sports. Initially introduced through its partner teams, these talent development initiatives were broadened through the formation of the PETRONAS Formula Xperience (PFX) racing school, formed in 2006. Designed to bridge karting and open-wheel single seater formula racing, the racing school programme is aimed at equipping young racing talents with the fundamentals of single-seater formula racing, necessary to prepare young talents for competitive racing.
