PETRONAS unveils MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula One Team 2011 challenger in Malaysia and reveals motorsports portfolio

Following the recent worldwide unveiling of the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula One Team’s 2011 challenger in Valencia, Spain; the MGP W02 today made its Malaysian debut at the home ground of the team’s title partner, PETRONAS.

Unveiled by the young drivers in PETRONAS’ talent development programme; the event was officiated by former Prime Minister and PETRONAS Advisor, YAB Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. He was accompanied by PETRONAS President & CEO, Dato’ Shamsul Azhar Abbas, and Senior General Manager, Corporate Services Division PETRONAS, Mohammad Medan Abdullah.

Marking the start of its 2011 motorsports campaign, PETRONAS announced its partnership portfolio in the various motorsports categories at the domestic, regional and international level.

PETRONAS also revealed its talent development programmes for young drivers and riders this season, including existing programmes like its PETRONAS Formula Xperience (PFX) racing school. Other initiatives include development programmes through its partner teams; PETRONAS MOFAZ RACING and TEAM MERITUS competing in the Formula Pacific series; and the PETRONAS SYNTIUM TEAM in major endurance racing series.

Meanwhile, PETRONAS will also support the development of local riders Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah (17) and Mohd Ramdan Rosli (15) as well as the continuation of the MotoGP Wildcard rider programme.

Mohammad Medan Abdullah, Senior General Manager, Corporate Services Division, PETRONAS notes, “Our motorsports involvement through the various teams at different levels is crucial in facilitating and generating commercial business returns as well as international brand visibility. Meanwhile, our talent development initiatives are an equally important component in our motorsports portfolio. These initiatives represent PETRONAS’ contribution towards the development of young Malaysian talents, able to progress their racing careers from the local level to the international arena. We are realistic in that this is a process that takes time; therefore it is crucial to first establish a strong foundation from which these talents can first be nurtured.”

The 2011 sporting portfolio includes PETRONAS’ involvement in Formula One and MotoGP with the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula One team and the YAMAHA FACTORY RACING Team; and in regional championships through the PETRONAS SYNTIUM TEAM (Japanese Super Taikyu Endurance Series) and PETRONAS SYNTIUM MOTO YAMAHA MALAYSIA TEAM (PETRONAS FIM Asia Road Racing Championship).

Locally, PETRONAS will continue to support its two satellite teams – PETRONAS SYNTIUM MOTO RACELINE and PETRONAS SYNTIUM MOTO AHM in the PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship.

PETRONAS remains the title sponsor of the Formula 1™ PETRONAS Malaysia Grand Prix; and motorcycle championships – the PETRONAS FIM Asia Road Racing and the PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship.
